Nothing worth having comes easy. This is one saying that every student aspiring to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) takes to heart. Life of a CA student can be defined in three simple yet powerful words – patience, perseverance, and practice. The life of CA aspirants revolves around these words, and their world becomes a construct of all the dynamics and challenges that the CA course has to offer.

In India, the Chartered Accountancy profession is regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), viz., a statutory body established by an act of Parliament, namely The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No. XXXVIII of 1949). The said Institute has been bestowed with the responsibility of conducting, evaluating, and assessing CA examinations. While it is no secret that the CA examination is amongst the toughest examinations to get through, a fact less known is that for a population of 1.39 billion (source – Statistics Times.com), there are around 3 lac Chartered Accountants (as on 1 April 2021) (source – Wikipedia).

The CA Final examination is conducted twice in a year, usually with a gap of 6 months (May and November), and consists of two groups with four papers each.

Students must score 40% in each subject and an aggregate of 50% in each group to pass the final examination.

CA-Final September 2025 Pass Percentage

The ICAI has declared the result for the CA Final September 2025 on November 3, 2025. The pass percentage, along with the toppers list, is provided below. The table contains the information about the number of candidates who appeared and the number of candidates who passed the examination.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India declares the results of CA-Final (new scheme) for both groups shortly after the exams. Consequent to the declaration of the results, the ICAI announces the pass percentage of the chartered accountants course. The Board will specify the number of candidates who appeared, the number of students who passed, and the rank holders.

The Institute (ICAI) will declare the results in online mode. For May 2022, the total passing percentage for both groups is around 17.04% for the CA Final course and 19.84% for the CA Intermediate course. CA-Final Old Course

The pass percentage of CA-Final Old Course for the year 2021, January session, for both groups is 1.41%—in January 2021, the number of candidates -1412 - qualified as chartered accountants.

The exam, generally held in November 2020, was rescheduled and held in January 2021.

CA-Final New Course

The pass percentage ofthe  CA-Final new course in both groups is 6%. In January 2021, the number of candidates who appeared and qualified as chartered accountants (new scheme) was 1270.

Results of Chartered Accountants Final Examination-Old Course Attempts

CA-Final pass percentage in November 2020 was 6%, and in January 2021, it is 1.41%. It is lower by 4.43% than the pass percentage of the year in November 2020.

Results of Chartered Accountants Final Examination-New Course

The ICAI CA-Final pass percentage(New Course) for January 2021 shows a downward trend at 8.47% compared to the November 2020 CA-Final Results. For group (i), it is 6.29% lower than the pass percentage in November 2020, and group 2 is lower by 12.93%.

Group (i): In CA-Final Nov 2020 (old course), the number of candidates (appeared) is 12026, the number of candidates (passed) is 2145, and the pass percentage for group (i) for the old course is 17.84%.

Group (ii): In the old course of CA-Final Nov 2020, the number of candidates is 17132, the number of candidates who passed is 5442, and the pass percentage for group (ii) is 31.77%

Both Groups: The number of candidates is 4143, the no of candidates passed is 242, and the percentage (pass) of CA-final is 5.84%

CA-Final Pass Percentage New Course

Percentage(Pass) -  November 2020(New Course)

Group (i): In the CA-Final Nov 2020 (old course), the number of candidates who appeared is 32542, the number of candidates who passed is 4179, and the pass percentage for group (i) for the new course is 12.84%.

Group (ii): In the old course of CA-Final Nov 2020, the number of candidates was 27907, the number of candidates who appeared and passed was 8643, and the pass percentage for group (ii) is 30.97%.

Both Groups: The number of candidates who appeared in both groups is 19284, the number of candidates who passed is 2790, and the percentage of CA-final is 14.47%.

Group (i): In the CA-Final Nov 2019 (old course), the number of candidates who appeared is 27409, the number of candidates who passed is 7384, and the pass percentage for group (i) only for the new course is 26.94%.

Group (ii): In the old course of CA-Final Nov 2020, the number of candidates is 37589, the number of candidates who appeared and passed is 8679, and the pass percentage for group (ii) only is 23.09%

Both Groups: The number of candidates is 8021, the no of candidates passed is 817, and the pass percentage group (ii) of CA-final is 10.19%.

The total number of candidates who appeared and passed for Nov. 2019 is 73,019, the total number of candidates (passed) is 16,880, and the percentage for Nov 2019 is 23.11%.

CA- Final Pass Percentage New Course

Group (i): In the CA-Final-Nov. 2019 new course, 27861 is the number of candidates (appeared), the number of candidates passed is 4830, and the pass percentage group (i) for the new course is 17.34%.

Group (ii): In the old course of CA-Final Nov 2020, 26972 is the number of candidates (appeared), no of candidates who passed is 7593, and the pass percentage is 28.15%.

Both Groups: In both groups, 15003 is the number of candidates (appeared), the number of candidates passed is 2268, and the final pass percentage is 15.12%.

In all, 69836 is the number of candidates (appeared), 14,691 candidates passed is 14,691, and the pass percentage is 21.04% for Nov. 2019.

Pass Percentage of CA Final May 2019 (Old Course)

Group (i): In the CA-Final May 2019 (old course), 25052 is the number of candidates who appeared, and 4610 candidates passed, with a pass percentage (new scheme) is 17.34%.

Group (ii): In the old course of CA-Final May 2019, 36945 is the number of candidates (who appeared), and 8762 candidates, with a passing percentage is 23.72%.

(iii) Both Groups: In both groups, 11092 appeared for the exams, 1669 candidates passed (pass percentage is 15.05%) - Group (i), and 432 candidates passed (CA-Final pass percentage is 3.89%) - Group (ii).

Among those who appeared for both groups, 2313 candidates passed (pass percentage 20.85%.

Pass Percentage CA Final Nov. 2018(Old Course)

Group (i): In the examination held in Nov. 2018, the old course, 32633, is the number of candidates who appeared. 9934 candidates passed-pass percentage(new course scheme) 30.44%.

Group (ii): In the old course of Final May 2019 (old course), 35655 is the number of candidates (appeared), 8348 candidates passed-pass percentage (new scheme) 23.41%.

Both Groups: A total of 22514 appeared for the exams, 5428 candidates passed (pass percentage is 24.11%) -Group (i), and 655 candidates passed (pass percentage is 2.91%) - Group (ii).

Among those who appeared for both groups, 3383 candidates passed both groups, and the final pass percentage is 15.03%.

CA Final Pass Percentage November 2018 (New Course)

The final pass percentage in November 2018 is as follows

Group (i): Only 884 of the 6182 students passed the examination held in November 2018 in the new course. The percentage of the pass (i) group only is 14.30%.

Group (ii): Only 894 of the 3307 students passed the examination held in November 2018 in the new course. The percentage of pass (group II only) is 27.03%.

Both Groups: Of the 4075 students who appeared for the CA-Final exam in both groups, 542 passed in the group (i) only, with the final pass percentage of 13.30%, 293 passed in the group (ii) only, with the final pass percentage of 7.19%, and 670 passed both group,s with a final pass percentage of 15.44%.

Of the 13563 students who appeared for the CA-Final Exam, 3283 passed both groups with a pass percentage of 24.2%.

The CA-Final pass percentage for January 2021, in the old course, is down by 4.43% in comparison with November 2020.

Pass Percentage November 2018 (New Course)

The old course shows a downward trend of 13% - Group (i) and 19.56% - Group (ii).

In comparison, January 2021 results show a downward trend of 6.29% in group (i) and 12.93% (ii).

CA Final May 2022 Result: Pass Percentage, Toppers & Merit List

On the Result day, the aspirants can check the merit list of the Final Exams. The Merit list displays the marks and names of those who scored the first fifty ranks in the exams.

• You will see the CHECK MERIT LIST icon and click on Final.
•  Enter your registration number(roll number) and the Captcha code.
• Click on the CHECK RESULT icon.
• The result of the person whose registration number is input will appear on the screen.

The CA exam starts as soon as students take the first step to get enrolled for the course, and it is anything beyond the 3 hours spent at the examination centre. It requires years of dedication and discipline for one to put sincere efforts into studying, attending tuitions, training as an article assistant, and taking a number of mock tests before appearing for the final exams. Hence, it is no exaggeration to say that preparing for the CA examination is more of a marathon than a mere stint.

The aspirants are expected to make lifestyle changes, to say the least, and keep up with the demanding study-work schedule. There is a certain category of students who believe that to become a CA calls for a complete sacrifice of their social life, and attending any family events or social gatherings will result in bad karma. They would rather choose to face their books than to waste their time on Facebook.

There is also another category of students who believe that balancing is the key and that a little distraction can do no harm. Their regular catch-ups with friends and family help them to destress and unwind their minds. Regardless of the approach chosen by students, their ultimate destination is the same.

The CA course requires preparation of both body and mind, as a healthy body is said to host a healthy mind. In some unfortunate times, the hectic schedule may take a toll on the physical and/or mental health of an aspirant, which should be treated with utmost care and urgency. Although it is only the candidate who sits in the exam hall and writes papers, it is fair to say that the entire family goes through the examination, as every member makes their own share of adjustments to give every possible comfort to students.

In this number-crunching profession, women are accomplishing new heights and fighting the gender bias to make the profession more gender inclusive. In this regard, India has seen a commendable increase in the number of women Chartered Accountants over the years. The ICAI President shares that women CAs today comprise of 28% of the total member strength, while female students stand at 42% of the total student enrolments. This is also made evident from the growing numbers of women CAs in the past 5 years, viz., 64,685 women CAs in 2017, followed by 70,047in 2018; 73,807 in 2019; 81,564 in 2020, and 88,983 in 2021.

Verification of Marks

The Chartered Accountants Regulation, 1988, does not allow the re-evaluation of the answer book. Nevertheless, the student can apply for verification of marks, checking if any question remains unevaluated and totalling errors on the cover page.

Students apply for the verification of marks within a month of the published result.

Verification Procedure

While to many, the CA passing percentage acts as a deterrent to opt for CA, to others, the very same fuels a challenge they dare to dream and accomplish. It is indeed a profession highly respected by people across the globe, which makes the fight even more alluring and rewarding. While some may clear CA in their first or second attempt, some take multiple attempts and become stronger in their resolve with every attempt.

For those few lucky ones (read genius minds) who get through in the first attempt, when asked, most always say that it was the All India Rank (AIR) that they were aiming for, and passing was never a choice. In the September 2025 exam, the AIR 1 was secured by Mukund Agiwal with a score of 83.33%, the AIR 2 was secured by Tejas Mundada with a score of 82%, and the AIR 3 was secured by Bakul Gupta with a score of 81.50%.

However, by looking at the passing percentage, the one thing that is crystal clear is that CA is not for the faint-hearted, as it may take more failures before one clears this exam. But as they say, Get tougher when the going gets tough, most students do not shy away from appearing multiple times for the exam, as they know that endurance is the key to success. Students should not be discouraged from continuing to pursue the course merely by failing in the exams, as the success of a Chartered Accountant is not defined by the number of attempts taken, but becoming a Chartered Accountant is, by itself, a complete success story.

Over the years, the CA profession has been the recipient of many generous compliments. Railway Minister, Mr. Piyush Goyal, being a CA himself, has said The signature of a CA on an audit report carries the power of your commitment to integrity, honest reporting of the state of affairs of different bodies. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam offered his appreciation for the profession in words like Chartered Accountants are partners in nation building. I do believe that CAs reflect challenges achieved. They are individuals with a clear aim & a can-do attitude to succeed & perform.

And last but certainly not least, the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, said the following words on CA Day, i.e., July 1, 2021: Greetings to all Chartered Accountants on CA Day. This community has a vital role in progress. I call upon all CAs to keep the focus on excellence so that Indian firms emerge as one of the best globally.
