CA Articleship: Everything About 2-Year Training After CA Inter

CA Articleship is the compulsory practical training stage that converts CA Intermediate knowledge into professional skills. Under the current ICAI scheme, eligible students complete two years of training after passing both CA Intermediate groups and completing ICITSS. During this period, they may work on audit, taxation, GST, accounting, reporting and compliance under an eligible practising Chartered Accountant.

What Is CA Articleship?

CA Articleship is a registered training arrangement between a CA student, called an articled assistant, and an eligible practising Chartered Accountant, called the principal. It allows students to apply accounting, audit, tax and legal concepts to real assignments while developing communication, documentation, judgement and professional discipline. ICAI makes practical training compulsory because examination knowledge alone cannot fully prepare students for client responsibilities, confidentiality, deadlines and professional decision-making.

Is CA Articleship Compulsory?

Yes. Practical training is an essential part of the pathway to becoming a Chartered Accountant in India. Passing CA examinations does not complete every ICAI requirement because students must also finish the prescribed training and fulfil the applicable course and membership conditions. Students registered under an older scheme should follow the duration and conditions displayed in their own SSP records.

CA Articleship Eligibility After CA Inter

A student can begin a two-year CA Articleship only after passing both groups of CA Intermediate and completing ICITSS. The student must then secure a vacancy under an eligible principal and register through the SSP Portal. This condition applies to Foundation Route and Direct Entry Route students. Passing only one Intermediate group is not sufficient under the current two-year scheme.

Documents Students Should Keep Ready

Students should keep their Intermediate result, ICITSS record, photograph, signature, identity and address details, educational documents, principal information, joining date and deed-related papers ready. All details should match ICAI records to prevent registration or approval delays.

How to Register for CA Articleship

After accepting an offer, the student and principal execute the deed of articles and complete the prescribed SSP process. The student uploads the required documents, submits the application and obtains the principal’s online approval. Registration is complete only when the SSP account shows the accepted practical training record with the correct principal, commencement date and duration.

How to Choose the Right CA Articleship Firm

The best firm is not always the largest or highest-paying option. Students should compare work exposure, department allocation, client interaction, mentoring, location, travel, office hours, leave culture, reimbursements and CA Final support. Large firms often provide structured but specialised work, mid-size firms may offer balanced exposure, and smaller firms may provide wider responsibilities and direct client contact.

Questions to Ask Before Joining

Ask which department you will join, whether rotation is available, what assignments articles receive, how often travel is required and who will review your work. Also clarify the stipend, reimbursements, working hours, busy-season expectations, leave recording and industrial training policy. Promises that attendance is unnecessary, demands for payment for registration or refusal to explain the work profile are warning signs.

Work Done During CA Articleship

Common assignments include statutory audit, internal audit, tax audit, income-tax returns, TDS compliance, GST returns, reconciliations, bookkeeping, ledger scrutiny, financial statement preparation, ROC filings and MIS reporting. Specialised firms may also offer valuation, due diligence, financial modelling or risk advisory exposure. Good training should gradually move students from routine checking to understanding complete assignments and professional conclusions.

CA Articleship Stipend, Working Hours and Leave

Payment of the applicable minimum stipend is required, although firms may offer more. ICAI states that articled assistants should normally work 35 hours per week excluding lunch. Exceptional work should not exceed 45 hours per week, and additional completed hours may qualify for compensatory leave. Students should maintain personal attendance, leave and stipend records. Because proposed revised stipend rates were published for public comments in July 2026, the effective rates should be verified before publishing an amount or joining a firm.

CA Industrial Training

Industrial training allows eligible students to complete part of practical training in an approved company. The period is nine to twelve months after completing at least 12 months of practical training, subject to the required notice and registration conditions. It can provide exposure to corporate finance, FP&A, treasury, reporting, controls and commercial decision-making. Students should confirm the eligibility of both the organisation and supervising member before accepting an offer.

E-Diary and Dummy Articleship Risk

ICAI made the E-Diary mandatory for students commencing fresh practical training from 1 January 2026. It records attendance, tasks, stipend information and principal approval, improving the transparency of practical training. Students should avoid dummy articleship arrangements where registration exists without genuine attendance or work. Such arrangements may create regulatory problems and leave students without the practical skills expected in interviews and professional employment.

How to Succeed in CA Articleship

Students should strengthen accounting and audit fundamentals, improve Excel skills, write professional emails, protect client information and request regular feedback. A learning notebook can record procedures, mistakes, technical provisions and skills without storing confidential client data. Students should understand why each task is performed and request wider exposure when their work remains limited to one repetitive area.

Balance Articleship With CA Final Preparation

CA Final preparation should continue through realistic weekly targets. Use shorter weekday sessions for classes and revision and weekends for question practice and mock tests. During busy periods, maintaining continuity is better than following an unrealistic schedule. CA Test Series can support working articles through ICAI-pattern papers, chapter-wise practice, full-syllabus mock exams, expert answer evaluation and performance feedback.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid choosing a firm only for brand value, accepting an offer without understanding the role, ignoring SSP deadlines, failing to track leave, depending entirely on seniors and postponing CA Final preparation. Never leave a principal or join another firm without completing the applicable ICAI transfer process. Keep copies of forms, approvals, stipend records and attendance details until training is formally completed.

Conclusion

CA Articleship is more than a compulsory two-year requirement after CA Intermediate. It is where students learn how accounting, auditing, taxation and compliance work is completed under real deadlines and client expectations. Choosing the right firm, registering correctly, maintaining accurate records, seeking meaningful exposure and preparing consistently for CA Final can build a strong foundation for careers in audit, taxation, corporate finance, advisory, banking or independent CA practice.
